Suburb Profile - Churchlands

Suburb Photos

This suburb became known as "Churchlands" after being purchased by the Catholic Church in 1891. Little residential development occurred in Churchlands until the 1980's, when extensive subdivision occurred adjacent to Herdsman Lake. Development is still underway within the north eastern sector of Churchlands, which is now referred to as "Floreat Lakes". Residential dwellings are characterised by large, modern, two storey designs with an average lot size of 850m2. The popularity of infill development has resulted in duplexes and units becoming a significant form of residential construction throughout the area. Churchlands contains a significant concentration of educational institutions Churchlands Senior High School, Newman College, Churchlands Primary School and Newman College Junior School. Local shopping needs are met by a small deli and growers' market on Flynn Street. Churchlands also has access to a number of passive and active recreation areas, focusing on the Herdsman Lake regional open space.
